Coconut, known as Cocos nucifera, is a widely recognized palm tree. Additionally, it is a versatile plant that has been serving various purposes for ages. The coconut tree can reach a height of up to 30 meters, with long pinnate leaves measuring 4-6 meters in length. Furthermore, the trunk becomes clean and smooth as the old leaves shed. Nowadays, dwarf varieties are preferred for their slower growth, sweeter coconut water, and brightly colored fruits.

While often mistaken as a nut, the coconut fruit is actually a drupe consisting of three layers. The mesocarp, made of valuable fiber, holds significant economic value and finds use in traditional and commercial applications. Both the exocarp and mesocarp contribute to the coconut’s husk.

Coconut is an important oil crop that thrives in humid regions. Moreover, in addition to the edible kernels, the thick endocarp of the coconut yields nutritious vegetable oil. The dry husk is utilized to produce coir, which is essential in manufacturing ropes, mats, baskets, brushes, and brooms. Interestingly, in Sanskrit, coconut is referred to as ‘kalpa vriksha,’ meaning ‘the tree that provides all the necessities of life.’

Furthermore, tender coconuts, known as unripe coconuts, offer refreshing coconut water, making them a popular beverage during scorching summers.

Impact in Numbers

Carbon Fixed  250 Kgs per tree.

CO2 reduction from the atmosphere by 900 Kg per tree.

Increase in farmers’ income by 6000 INR per tree per year upon fruiting.

Economic value to the farmers

Coconut farming is considered one of the most economically beneficial options for farmers. Additionally, coconut trees can be strategically planted in regular fields, allowing sufficient space between them. Furthermore, in the middle of the field, other vegetables can be cultivated simultaneously.

Moreover, coconut trees bear a large number of nuts each year, which can be sold at a favorable price. Approximately 250 nuts are produced per tree annually. These nuts can be consumed by the farmers themselves, sold in the market, dried for various uses, or used to extract coconut oil.

The income of farmers can be significantly increased through coconut farming, providing them with additional financial stability and opportunities.

Plant a Tree of Coconut Palm: About the Project

Farmers who receive coconut saplings are also provided with the necessary technical knowledge to cultivate them. In addition, the project is designed to be a long-term initiative, offering continuous support to the farmers for a duration of 3 years. Moreover, during this period, the farmers will receive guidance and assistance to ensure successful coconut cultivation.

Technology

The trees in the project are geotagged to accurately track their locations. Furthermore, the area boundary is marked using GPS technology to establish clear demarcations. Moreover, the farmers’ details, including images, are recorded for comprehensive documentation. Additionally, all data related to the project, including carbon fixation calculations conducted yearly, is captured and stored using mobile apps directly from the field. The equations developed by experts for different species are utilized in the app and reports to calculate carbon fixation. Moreover, total transparency is maintained throughout the process, from data collection to storage and analysis.

Impact assessment

The project measures the impact it creates for wildlife and farmers. Furthermore, data is captured at regular intervals to assess this impact. Moreover, the captured data is analyzed by comparing it with previous data collected on the same parameters a few months ago. In addition, the change is evaluated in relation to the planned results.

Reports

The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following

1) Trees status as of the last visit made

2) Any mortality in the trees planted

3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project

4) Economic impact on the farmers.

5) Ecological impact created.
