Jackfruit, also known as Artocarpus heterophyllus, is believed to have originated in the region between the western Ghats of southern India. Furthermore, it is extensively cultivated in tropical regions across the globe. Both the ripe and unripe forms of this fruit are enjoyed for their mild taste and meat-like texture, earning it the nickname ‘vegetable meat’.

Moreover, this evergreen tree has a relatively short trunk but boasts dense treetops, reaching heights of 10 to 20 meters. Sometimes, it develops buttress roots for support. The bark of the jackfruit tree exhibits a smooth texture with a reddish-brown tinge and, when injured, releases a spiraled milky juice. Its blooming period typically occurs between December and February or March.

In addition, jackfruit has played a pivotal role in Indian agriculture for centuries. It serves as an excellent source of potassium, which helps in reducing blood pressure, and contains anti-cancer substances. As the world’s largest edible fruit, cultivating jackfruit can provide farmers with significant benefits and opportunities for maximizing their agricultural gains.

Impact in Numbers

Carbon Fixed  700 Kgs per tree.

CO2 reduction from the atmosphere by 2400 Kgs per tree.

Increase in farmers’ income by 2000 INR per tree per year upon fruiting.

Economic value to the farmers

The jackfruit tree yields a bountiful harvest of jackfruits each year. These fruits can be enjoyed within the household or sold in their raw form. Moreover, farmers can utilize the jackfruits to make pickles and sell them, adding another avenue for income generation. Furthermore, the versatile nature of jackfruit and its numerous uses contribute to the economic prosperity of farmers.

Plant a Tree of Jackfruit: About the Project

Once the farmers receive the Jackfruit saplings, they will also be equipped with the necessary technical knowledge to cultivate and market Jackfruit. The project extends long-term support to the farmers, spanning a period of three years until the Jackfruit trees begin to bear fruit. Furthermore, during this duration, the farmers will receive guidance and assistance to ensure successful growth and cultivation. Moreover, the project aims to empower farmers and enhance their expertise in Jackfruit cultivation for long-term sustainability.

Technology

The team geotags the trees, marking the area boundary using GPS technology. Farmer details, along with images, are also recorded. Additionally, all data is captured and stored through mobile apps, directly from the field. Furthermore, the project calculates the annual carbon fixation by employing equations developed by experts for different species, which are incorporated into the app and reports. Total transparency is maintained throughout the process, from data acquisition to storage and analysis.

Impact assessment

We measure the impact it creates for both wildlife and farmers. Moreover, all data is captured at regular intervals, allowing for comparison with previous data collected on the same parameters just a few months ago. Furthermore, the observed changes are measured against the planned results, enabling an assessment of progress and effectiveness.

Reports

The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following

1) Trees status as on the last visit made

2) Any mortality in the trees planted

3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project

4) Economic impact on the farmers.

5) Ecological impact created.
