Neem is a multipurpose tree that is highly popular in India, where it provides food and insecticide. Bark is dark gray outside and reddish on the inside, deeply fissured and flaking in old trees. Sap is colorless, sticky and unpleasant smelling. Leaves are compound, alternate, and tend to cluster near the end of the branches. A mature neem tree can produce 300 kg of leaves per year. The neem tree is noted for its drought resistance. Normally it thrives in areas with sub-arid to sub-humid conditions, with an annual rainfall of 400–1,200 mm (16–47 in). It can grow in regions with an annual rainfall below 400 mm. Neem can grow in many different types of soil, but it thrives best on well drained deep and sandy soils. The tree is best suited in the dry and semi arid regions and grows very fast with a little care. A very good tree that is being planted in large numbers for a healthy country.

Description

Value to the farmer

Food : The tender shoots and flowers of the neem tree are eaten as a vegetable in India. Medicine : The neem parts have been used in medicine in the country and are in good demand. Timber : The wood is very hard and resistant to many insects. Pest and disease control : Neem is a key ingredient in non-pesticidal management (NPM), providing a natural alternative to synthetic pesticides. Neem seeds are ground into powder that is soaked overnight in water and sprayed on the crop. Organic farming: Neem cake, oil etc are used in organic farming as well. Research : More research is being done to get more value out of neem trees. The farmers are benefited as they can sell almost all parts of the tree at a price.

About the Project

Once the saplings are given to the farmers, they shall also be provided with the technical knowledge to grow the same. The project is a long term one and support to the farmers shall be given for 3 years. The farmers can be a part of the a group and they would be encouraged to grow them by explaining the details of benefits they shall be getting. The trees will be a part of the set that shall be given to the farmers for improving their economic status.

Technology

The trees are geotagged. The area boundary is marked using GPS. Farmer details along with the images. All the data is captured and stored through mobile apps directly from the field. Carbon fixing that is happening yearly is calculated by using the equations developed by the experts for different species in app and reports. Total transparency is maintained in getting the data, storing the data and analysing the data.

Impact assessment

The impact that is being created by the project for wildlife and farmers is measured. All data is captured in regular intervals and the same is analysed by comparing with the previous data on the same parameters calculated a few months ago. The change is measured against the planned results.

Reports

The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following

1) Trees status as on the last visit made

2) Any mortality in the trees planted

3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project

4) Economic impact on the farmers.

5) Ecological impact created.
