Reversing Desertification
Desertification happens when good lands get changed into barren lands where nothing grows. It’s a real challenge with climate change and pressure on the green areas of the world. Over 2 billion hectares of land have moved towards desert and more are going towards desertification. There are many examples of projects which are running to stop desertification in the world. China has been growing the Great Green Wall since 1980’s to stop the Gobi desert from spreading into China. Projects in Central Asia, Africa, South America are going on to make the deserts green.
Technology is definitely a very important factor in stopping the desertification and also bringing back the lands that have become deserts. Some can be brought back quickly and some will take time. The places where desertification has happened had a natural balance of trees and animals. The same needs to be brought back using technology. How to plant trees, where to plant, spacing, Grass that is sturdy, small bushes that need to be put etc need to be given using GIS. Only then over a period of time will the desertification process stop and turn the lands into green. Which will be suitable for people to live
This challenge has many aspects to it and needs very careful planning at the grassroot level. Local people and governments need to be aligned to this kind of project. With their participation and technology intervention, success can be easy and assured.
