Syzygium cumini, commonly known as Malabar plum, Java plum, Black plum, jamun, jambul, and jambolan, is a highly sought-after evergreen tropical tree valued for its fruit, timber, and ornamental qualities. Moreover, this tree can reach a height of 30 m and live for over a century. It boasts dense foliage, offering cool shade and adding to its ornamental appeal. Furthermore, the wood of this tree becomes water-resistant when kiln-dried.
The leaves of Syzygium cumini display a pinkish hue when young, gradually transforming into leathery and glossy dark green as they mature. They serve as nutritious fodder for livestock. Jamun trees begin to bloom from March to April, yielding fruits from May to June. The berries are oblong and ovoid, initially green and later transitioning through shades of pink, crimson red, and ultimately black as they ripen. The fruit exhibits a delightful combination of sweetness, mild sourness, and astringency, and has the unique characteristic of turning the tongue purple. Additionally, jamun cultivation can thrive even in areas with low soil fertility and limited water availability.
Impact in Numbers
Carbon Fixed 250 Kgs per tree.
CO2 reduction from the atmosphere by 900 Kg per tree.
Increase in farmers’ income by 5000 INR per tree per year upon fruiting.
Economic value to the farmers
Black plum is a highly anticipated fruit that ripens once a year and is renowned for its exceptional taste. Due to its limited availability, the prices of black plums remain high. Additionally, a single tree has the potential to yield up to 200 kg of fruits annually. With the lucrative market prices of this fruit, farmers can generate a substantial income within a short span of time.
Plant a Tree of Jamun: About the Project
Once the saplings are given to the farmers, they shall also be provided with the technical knowledge to grow and sell fruits. The project is a long-term one and support to the farmers shall be given for 3 years till the fruits start to come in trees.
Technology
The team geotags each tree, ensuring precise location tracking. The area boundary is accurately marked using GPS technology. Farmer details, including relevant images, are meticulously recorded. Additionally, all data pertaining to the project is efficiently captured and directly stored through mobile apps, streamlining the process. Carbon fixation, occurring annually, is calculated using expert-developed equations within the app and reports. Total transparency is diligently maintained throughout the entire process, from data collection to storage and analysis.
Impact assessment
The team actively measures the impact it creates for both wildlife and farmers. Regular intervals are dedicated to capturing relevant data, which is then analyzed by comparing it to previous data collected on the same parameters, just a few months prior. Additionally, the change observed is measured against the planned results, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the project’s effectiveness.
Reports
The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following
1) Trees status as of the last visit made
2) Any mortality in the trees planted
3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project
4) Economic impact on the farmers.
5) Ecological impact created.
