Pharey’s Leaf Monkey
Pharey’s leaf monkeys are one of the world’s most endangered primate species. Exclusively inhabit the North Eastern Indian states of Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Manipur. These small-sized creatures exhibit a distinct coloration of black and gray, with white circles around their eyes. They live in groups of 10 – 15, actively moving from place to place in search of food and shelter.
Their high endangerment is primarily due to habitat loss, construction, scarcity of food, fur poaching, and the pet trade. Over the past few decades, their population has drastically declined, with only 1500 individuals remaining in India.
The project focuses on protecting the habitats of Pharey’s leaf monkeys through two main strategies. Firstly, planting abundant trees in their migratory areas. Secondly, creating “tree bridges” to connect different parts of the forest using a dense set of trees. Therefore, facilitates easier navigation and access to food for the monkeys.
By engaging in the simple act of planting trees and providing more food and protection, we can make a significant difference in the lives of these beautiful primates. The goal of this conservation effort is to reverse the declining trend in their numbers and ensure a brighter future for Pharey’s leaf monkeys.

About the Project
The project to save Phayre’s Leaf-monkey encompasses multiple aspects.
Firstly, we are planting trees near the forest areas where the group resides. Secondly, within the forest, we are planting native fruit trees to provide a natural food source for them. Additionally, we are creating tree bridges for Phayre’s Leaf-monkey groups to facilitate easy movement.
In total, the project aims to plant over 5000 trees in and around the protected areas where the Phayre’s Leaf-monkey groups are found. Our primary focus is on properly protecting and nurturing these trees to ensure they grow big and healthy. This aspect is critical for the success of the project as it will directly benefit the leaf monkeys by providing them with ample food and shelter. Moreover, the tree bridges will enhance their mobility and access to resources, further supporting their well-being.
Impact creation
As the trees grow over the next few years, we will witness the impact they have on providing more food and shelter for Phayre’s Leaf monkeys. This will enable the monkeys to live in peace and contribute to an increase in their numbers. Consequently, the ongoing efforts to save and protect these primates will yield positive results, fostering a healthier and thriving population of Phayre’s Leaf-monkeys. Additionally, this achievement will mark a significant step forward in the conservation of this endangered species.
