Guava, scientifically known as Psidium guajava, represents an evergreen shrub or small-sized tree extensively grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Reaching a height of approximately 33 feet with spreading branches, the tree boasts a distinctive copper-colored bark that easily peels off. Its leaves are short-petioled, evergreen, and shaped as ovals or somewhat oblong elliptic. The fragrant white flowers, with 4 to 5 petals, swiftly shed. The fruit, varying from yellow to light green, comes in round, pear-shaped, or oval forms. The flesh, ranging from white to pink or red, becomes irresistibly delicious when perfectly ripe. Common propagation methods include cutting, grafting, and air layering.

With an abundance of antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, guava emerges as a nutritional powerhouse. It contributes to lowering blood sugar levels, enhancing heart health, alleviating menstrual symptoms, aiding weight loss, demonstrating anticancer effects, boosting immunity, and promoting healthy skin. Apart from its nutritional value, guava supports carbon fixing and proves beneficial for farmers through agroforestry projects.

Impact in Numbers

Carbon Fixed  50 Kgs per tree.

CO₂ reduction from the atmosphere by 180 Kg per tree.

Increase in farmers’ income by 5000 INR per tree per year upon fruiting

Economic Value to the Farmers

The tree produces guava, a fruit that the farmer and family members can eat or sell. The market price of guava consistently increases year by year, and a guava tree bears fruit twice a year, boosting the revenue generated from the planted trees.

About the Project

Once the project team distributes guava saplings to the farmers, they actively receive the necessary technical knowledge to successfully cultivate and sell guavas. This long-term initiative provides ongoing support to the farmers for a duration of 3 years, ensuring assistance until the guava trees bear fruit.

Additionally, farmers are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to grow guava trees and effectively market their produce. The project aims to empower farmers, enabling them to capitalize on the economic potential of guava tree cultivation. Through this comprehensive support system, farmers can establish sustainable livelihoods and achieve long-term economic prosperity.

Technology

Furthermore, the project team actively geotags the trees, ensuring precise tracking of their locations. . Using GPS, the team marks the area boundary, captures farmer details along with images, and stores all the data directly from the field through mobile apps. We calculate yearly carbon fixing using equations developed by experts for different species in the app and reports. We maintain total transparency in obtaining, storing, and analyzing the data.

Impact assessment

Particularly, the project team actively measures the impact it creates for both wildlife and farmers. Regularly capturing data at defined intervals ensures a comprehensive assessment of the project’s effects. The team then carefully analyzes this data by comparing it with the previous data collected on the same parameters calculated a few months ago. They precisely measure the observed changes against the planned results, enabling an accurate evaluation of progress and effectiveness.

Furthermore, this systematic monitoring allows for a deeper understanding of the project’s outcomes and facilitates informed decision-making. By comparing the current data with past records, the project can identify trends, successes, and areas for improvement. This process ensures that the project remains on track and enables the necessary adjustments to achieve the desired results.

Reports

The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following

1) Trees status as of the last visit made

2) Any mortality in the trees planted

3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project

4) Economic impact on the farmers.

5) Ecological impact created.
