Mouth-watering mangoes, scientifically known as Mangifera indica, become a delightful feast during the summers. This large mango fruit tree can reach heights of up to 30 meters. It can be distinguished into two main types—the Indian type and the Southeast Asian type. With nearly 500 varieties found exclusively in India, it is highly valued for both its green and ripe fruit. The mango tree’s dense crown provides a budding shelter for many birds and offers refreshing shade. The leaves are simple, shiny, and dark green.

Additionally, from the end of winter until spring, vibrant red and yellow flowers bloom on the mango tree. The mango fruit itself is irregularly egg-shaped, characterized as a fleshy drupe. When fully ripened, the interior flesh exhibits a bright orange hue, with variations of red depending on the variety. Mango trees thrive best in deep and sandy loam soils.

Symbolizing friendship and love, the mango holds the prestigious title of being the national fruit of India. Mango farming is a prominent commercial practice in the country. This fruit, known for its outstanding flavor, alluring fragrance, and delicious taste, is a rich source of Vitamins A and C. Savored by all, farmers can greatly benefit from investing in mango cultivation.

Value to the farmers

The mango tree makes a splendid addition to farmers’ fields. It grows to remarkable heights and boasts a vast spread. The tree’s branches are thick and long, offering shade, fruit, and leaves to all. Once the tree reaches maturity, the harvested fruits can be consumed or sold in the market at a profitable price. The farmer benefits from this versatile tree in numerous ways.

Plant a Mango Tree: About the Project

Once the project distributes mango saplings to farmers, it actively provides them with comprehensive technical knowledge on growing and selling mangoes. This long-term initiative aims to support farmers for 3 years, ensuring assistance until the mango trees bear fruit.

Technology

The project Plant a Mango Tree, geotags the trees, simultaneously marking the area boundary using GPS technology. It also captures farmer details along with corresponding images. All the data is efficiently collected and stored directly from the field through mobile apps. To calculate the yearly carbon fixation, the project utilizes expert-developed equations specific to different tree species within the app and generates detailed reports. Additionally, the project maintains total transparency throughout the entire process, from data acquisition to storage and analysis.

Impact assessment

Additionally, the project actively measures the impact it creates on wildlife and farmers. Regular intervals are set for data capture, enabling a comprehensive analysis by comparing it with previous data collected on the same parameters a few months ago. The observed changes are carefully measured against the planned results, ensuring effective monitoring of progress and alignment with project goals.

Reports

Unquestionably, we actively prepare and send comprehensive reports to the contributors. These reports cover the following essential information:

1) The current status of the trees based on the most recent visit made.

2) Any instances of tree mortality within the planted area.

3) The amount of carbon fixed in metric tons (MT) since the start of the project.

4) The economic impact observed on the farmers involved.

5) The ecological impact created as a result of the project’s implementation.

Additionally, these reports serve as a valuable means of keeping the contributors informed about the project’s progress and outcomes.
