Teak Tree

Teak (Tectona grandis) is a tropical hardwood tree that is highly valued for its various applications. Furthermore, it is a large deciduous tree commonly found in mixed hardwood forests, with fragrant white flowers arranged in dense clusters at the end of its branches. Moreover, teak wood is known for its durability, water resistance, and distinct leather-like smell when freshly milled. It is widely used in boat building, exterior construction, veneer, furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects.

Moreover, Tectona grandis is native to south and southeast Asia and has been present in the country for many centuries. Its wood has been extensively used in the manufacturing of furniture, boats, and other items. The cultivation of teak trees plays a significant role in enhancing the wealth of farmers. Once the trees reach maturity, they can be harvested and sold in the market, fetching a good sum of money for the farmers. This encourages them to continue planting saplings and nurturing them into valuable trees.

Impact in Numbers

Carbon Fixed  500 Kgs.

CO2 reduction from the atmosphere by 1800 Kgs.

Increase in farmer income by 2000 INR per cubic foot of wood on maturity.

Tree Dimensions on Maturity

Maximum height of the tree (m) 40
Tree canopy spread (m) 30
Tree trunk diameter (inches) 15

Value to the farmer

The tree exhibits remarkable carbon-fixing capabilities. Furthermore, thanks to the high density of its wood, it efficiently sequesters significant amounts of carbon, making it beneficial for the environment. Moreover, farmers have the opportunity to harvest the tree and sell its wood in the market at a favorable price, thereby contributing to their wealth accumulation.

Plant a Tree of Teak: About the Project

Once the farmers receive the saplings, they will also receive the necessary technical knowledge to cultivate them. Furthermore, the project is designed to provide long-term support to the farmers, extending for a period of 3 years. Moreover, the farmers will have the opportunity to be part of a group, where they will be motivated to grow the trees by explaining the various benefits they will receive. These trees, being a part of the set provided to the farmers, will play a crucial role in enhancing their economic status.

Technology

The team geotags the trees, ensuring their accurate location. Moreover, the area boundary is marked using GPS technology to precisely define the boundaries. Furthermore, farmer details, along with images, are recorded and stored through mobile apps directly from the field. All the captured data, including the annual carbon fixing calculations based on species-specific equations developed by experts, is stored and analyzed to maintain total transparency.

Impact assessment

The team actively measures the impact it creates for both wildlife and farmers. Moreover, all relevant data is captured at regular intervals. This data is then analyzed by comparing it with the previous data collected on the same parameters a few months ago. In addition, the change observed is carefully measured against the planned results, ensuring that the project is on track and achieving its intended outcomes.

Reports

The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following

1) Trees status as of the last visit made

2) Any mortality in the trees planted

3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project

4) Economic impact on the farmers.

5) Ecological impact created.
