The Banyan tree is known by all. It is one of the best trees that people have seen and has a huge religious and cultural significance. The leaves of this tree are broad and one can see the veins. When the tree starts growing, the aerial roots appear and go down to meet the ground. This gives it an appearance of hundreds of roots coming from the tree. The tree is a native of India and has been around for many centuries. The tree in its natural surroundings can grow upto 100 feet tall and almost the same spread. The tree is very dense and has numerous branches. It is able to survive in full sun and provides shade to many animals and birds. There are many varieties with green, golden and variegated leaves. The tree fixes carbon in large quantities and one tree alone can fix 5 MT in a 20 year period. The fruits that are produced are eaten by birds and animals and then spread everywhere. The tree is a place where monkeys, birds, animals, rodents make their home and multiply in large numbers. The shade provides respite from sun and reduces the temperature on the ground. It’s an extremely important tree for the environment and needs to be planted in large numbers.

Description

Value to the environment

The tree is a safe place for birds and animals to like and multiply. It provides oxygen and fixes carbon in large quantities. The evaporation is reduced in the shade. The tree can fix 5 MT of carbon in 20 year period.

About the Project

Once the saplings are given to the farmers, they shall also be provided with the technical knowledge to grow the same. The project is a long term one and support to the farmers shall be given for 3 years. The farmers can be a part of the a group and they would be encouraged to grow them by explaining the details of benefits they shall be getting. The trees will be a part of the set that shall be given to the farmers for improving their economic status.

Technology

The trees are geotagged. The area boundary is marked using GPS. Farmer details along with the images. All the data is captured and stored through mobile apps directly from the field. Carbon fixing that is happening yearly is calculated by using the equations developed by the experts for different species in app and reports. Total transparency is maintained in getting the data, storing the data and analysing the data.

Impact assessment

The impact that is being created by the project for wildlife and farmers is measured. All data is captured in regular intervals and the same is analysed by comparing with the previous data on the same parameters calculated a few months ago. The change is measured against the planned results.

Reports

The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following

1) Trees status as on the last visit made

2) Any mortality in the trees planted

3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project

4) Economic impact on the farmers.

5) Ecological impact created.
