Bamboo, the largest member of the grass family, encompasses a diverse group of evergreen perennial flowering plants. Renowned for their rapid growth, they hold the distinction of being among the fastest-growing plants worldwide. This exceptional growth rate, coupled with their ability to thrive in various conditions, makes bamboos highly suitable for afforestation, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation.
Additionally, bamboos exhibit remarkable resilience and adaptability, enabling their cultivation even on degraded lands. Each spring, new canes of bamboo emerge from the ground, quickly developing limbs and leaves within a span of approximately 60 days. Unlike many other plants, bamboo never experiences secondary growth and puts on new foliage every year. Its entire life cycle, from cane growth to maturity, concludes within a few months, solidifying its reputation as the fastest-growing woody plant.
Furthermore, the juice extracted from young bamboo plants offers relief for various ailments such as asthma, coughs, colds, fever, and gallbladder issues. For countless centuries, bamboo has been utilized as a building material, boasting compressive strength twice that of cement and surpassing the strength of steel. Moreover, bamboo serves as a source for recyclable and eco-friendly paper production. These attributes contribute to its high economic worth, ensuring that farmers cultivating bamboo can expect both early benefits due to rapid growth and a consistent demand for its versatile applications.

Impact in Numbers
Carbon Fixed 600 Kgs per bamboo clump.
CO2 reduction from the atmosphere by 2000 Kg per bamboo clump.
Increase in farmers’ income by 5000 INR per bamboo clump per year upon fully mature.
Economic value to the farmers
Bamboo shoots possess remarkable durability and resilience. Once they have established roots, they continually produce new shoots and experience continuous growth. A single cluster of bamboo can yield as many as 50 shoots within a span of 5 years, reaching an impressive height of 15 feet. These clusters provide a renewable source of bamboo that can be harvested as needed and sold in the market. Alternatively, bamboo finds extensive use in handicrafts, matchstick production, and various other industries.
Furthermore, bamboo stands out as an exceptionally resilient grass that requires minimal maintenance to thrive. This characteristic proves highly advantageous for farmers, as it minimizes the effort and resources needed for cultivation. As a result, farmers can steadily generate a positive income over time, leading to a substantial increase in their overall earnings. The enduring nature of bamboo ensures a sustainable and profitable venture for farmers, making it an attractive choice for enhancing their economic well-being.
Plant a Tree of Bamboo: About the Project
Once the team distributes Bamboo saplings to the farmers, they actively receive comprehensive technical knowledge on how to cultivate and sell Bamboo. This long-term initiative ensures that farmers are supported for a duration of 3 years. Simultaneously, providing continuous assistance throughout the growth and maturity of the Bamboo plants.
Furthermore, the project team emphasizes the importance of equipping farmers with the necessary skills and expertise for Bamboo cultivation. By imparting technical knowledge, farmers gain valuable insights into the growth requirements, harvesting techniques, and additionally market opportunities. This comprehensive support system empowers farmers to make informed decisions and optimize their cultivation practices, leading to improved yields and profitability. The project’s commitment to long-term support ensures that farmers have the resources and guidance needed to successfully cultivate and sell Bamboo, ultimately contributing to their economic prosperity.
The project team actively geotags the trees, ensuring precise location tracking. This is achieved by utilizing GPS technology to accurately mark the area boundaries. Furthermore, farmer details, accompanied by relevant images, are diligently captured, providing a comprehensive record of their involvement in the project.
Furthermore, all data, including geotagging information, farmer details, and images, is efficiently captured and securely stored through mobile apps directly from the field. This streamlined process allows for real-time data collection. This also minimizes the chances of data loss or errors. Moreover, the project employs expert-developed equations specific to different tree species within the app and reports, enabling the calculation of yearly carbon fixation.
Total transparency is a core principle of the project. Every step is carried out with utmost transparency, from data acquisition to storage and analysis. This approach ensures that all stakeholders have access to reliable and accurate information, fostering trust and accountability throughout the project.
The project actively measures the impact it creates for both wildlife and farmers. Regular intervals are designated for capturing comprehensive data, which is then analyzed by comparing it with the previous data collected. This comparative analysis allows for the measurement of change and facilitates an assessment of progress against the planned results.
The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following
1) Trees status as of the last visit.
2) Any mortality in the trees planted.
3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project
4) Economic impact on the farmers.
5) Ecological impact created.
