The One-Horned Indian Rhino

The Indian one-horned rhino, also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros, embodies the strength and beauty of India’s wildlife. It is found in the grasslands and forests of India and Nepal, representing the incredible biodiversity of our land.

These magnificent creatures play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our ecosystems. As herbivores, they shape the landscape by grazing on grasses and vegetation, promoting new growth and creating habitats for countless other species. Their very existence enriches the biodiversity of our lands, making them irreplaceable.

However, the Indian one-horned rhinos face significant challenges in the modern world. Habitat loss, illegal poaching, and human-wildlife conflicts threaten their survival. To protect these majestic beings and ensure their continued presence for future generations, Greenverz, in association with local village panchayats, is taking action. They are planting trees and grass to reduce human-animal conflicts and educating the villagers and locals on the importance of coexistence.

To make this project a success, Greenverz invites everyone to participate by planting and adopting trees for Project Rhino. By joining forces, we can contribute to safeguarding the Indian one-horned rhinos and securing their place in our natural heritage.

Name One Horned Indian Rhino
Scientific Name Rhinoceros unicornis

About the Project

The project to save Indian Rhinos comprises multiple aspects.

Firstly, we are planting trees near the forest areas and tall grass in the areas where they roam. Additionally, we are planting trees in the villages within the national parks to provide fruits and fuelwood, reducing their dependency on forest resources. Furthermore, educating the villagers on reducing human-Rhino conflict is an integral part of the project.

The project aims to plant over 10,000 trees in 8 villages in Assam, near the border of Kaziranga and Manas national parks. These trees will be planted on both the common village ground and private lands to reduce the villagers’ reliance on the forest for food and fuel. This reduction in dependency will help minimize interference in the national park, ensuring a safer environment for the Rhinos.

Since Rhinos frequently venture out of the park, the tall grass planted will serve as hiding spots and a food source for them, promoting their peaceful coexistence.

Another significant aspect of the project involves educating children and women about the importance of biodiversity and Rhinos. We will conduct in-person visits and create booklets to present the information in a playful manner, making it easier for people to comprehend the significance of preserving these majestic creatures and the environment they thrive in. By engaging the community and promoting awareness, we aim to foster a collective effort in protecting Indian Rhinos and preserving our natural heritage.

Impact Creation

The impact shall be seen in a few years’ time as the tree grows and people are educated about the importance of Rhinos in the wild. As children grow looking at pics and stories of Rhinos, there is expected to be a profound impact on their behavior towards the gentle giant.

Impact on Farmers

  4. Educating farmers and families shall help them understand better the interaction with wild animals.

Impact on Biodiversity

  1. Tall grass helps animals to get a natural place to hide and live.
  2. Fruit trees on the borders help biodiversity thrive.
  3. Less human-rhino conflicts due to education.

Reports

Regular reporting is ensured to let people know of the impact that is being created. The reporting includes

  1. Trees planted. Species. What they shall help in.
  2. Carbon is fixed in MT by the trees.
  3. List of villages and location of the trees.
