Hoolock Gibbons
Hoolock Gibbons, unique species of gibbons found in India, belong to the old world primates species. They inhabit the forests of North East India, specifically in Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
These beautiful gibbons exhibit dark and black coats for males and lighter brown coats for females. Living in small groups, they prefer to move from tree to tree while searching for food, rarely descending to the ground. Their rich vocalizations can be heard deep in the forests, reaching many miles around the residing regions.
Unfortunately, these stunning creatures face numerous threats, including hunting for meat, fur, and the pet trade, as well as habitat loss, fragmentation, and deforestation. As more forest areas are cleared, their living spaces become constrained, and finding food becomes increasingly challenging each year. Therefore, it becomes crucial to protect and restore their habitats.
To support these magnificent creatures, a promising approach is to plant trees suitable for their needs. The chosen trees are selected based on factors like nativity, fruit types, height, and canopy diameter, all of which contribute to the gibbons’ well-being and provide them with shade. Additionally, tree bridges are implemented as part of the project, facilitating their movement without having to come to the ground or near human settlements.
By contributing to this cause, we can help ensure the survival of these gibbons into the next decade. Together, we can make a positive impact and protect these unique creatures for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
About the Project – Hoolock Gibbons
The project to save Hoolock Gibbons comprises several aspects.
Firstly, trees are planted near the forest areas where the groups inhabit, creating a suitable environment for them. Secondly, within the forest, native fruit trees are planted, providing a natural and accessible food source for the gibbons. Additionally, tree bridges are constructed to facilitate easy movement for the Hoolock Gibbon groups.
In total, the project aims to plant over 10,000 trees in and around the protected areas where the Hoolock Gibbon groups are found. The primary focus is on properly protecting and nurturing these trees, ensuring they grow big and healthy, as this is vital for the gibbons’ well-being and survival.
Impact Creation
In a few years, we will see the impact as the trees grow, providing more food and shelter for the Hoolock Gibbons. This, in turn, will enable them to live in peace and lead to an increase in their numbers. As a result, the conservation efforts will bear fruit, benefiting both the gibbons and the ecosystem they inhabit.

Regular reporting is ensured to let people know of the impact that is being created. The reporting includes
- Trees planted. The fruit trees, dense canopy trees, tall trees, and tree bridges.
- Carbon is fixed in MT by the trees.
- List of villages and location of the trees.
- Impact on biodiversity.
