About the State
Situated in the Southern part, Tamil Nadu boasts a diverse landscape, embracing a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal, majestic mountains, and flowing rivers. Rich in wildlife, the state is home to tigers, bison, leopards, elephants, snakes, and numerous bird species. Amidst widespread agriculture, the state faces land pressure due to a high population. Rapid development has led to a decline in forest cover, currently standing at 20%.
With a significant farming community, the project Green Tamil Nadu seeks to benefit farmers by planting trees and providing them with fruits for consumption and sale. Additionally, the initiative aims to boost farmers’ income through the cultivation of fruit, medicinal, and timber trees. The agroforestry component addresses the challenges faced by farmers, striving to enhance their income. Each contribution will contribute to the growth of fruit trees, as well as the cultivation of shade and medicinal trees, fixing a minimum of 0.3 MT of carbon per contribution.
Impact in Numbers
Carbon Fixed 300 Kgs per tree.
CO₂ reduction from the atmosphere by 1100 Kgs per tree.
The positive impact will reach 1500 farmers.
Tamil Nadu boasts incredible wildlife, requiring the planting of trees and plants that facilitate animals and birds in consuming fruits and seeking shelter. Experts select trees based on soil conditions, water availability, temperature range, and native species. The strategic planting of diverse trees ensures an abundance of food and shelter for the varied wildlife, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity in the state. Each uniquely planted tree plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the overall biodiversity, supporting the lives of animals and birds in Tamil Nadu.
- The trees planted shall help in controlling the soil erosion.
- The project shall be able to increase the number of trees that are less in number in the state.
- Increase in the overall green cover of the state. The state has a forest cover of 20%. This needs to be increased to mitigate the growing pressure of the population.
Positive impact on farmers
- Farmers get high-quality saplings to plant on their lands adjacent to the forests. Fruit trees, Timber trees, Medicinal plants.
- Increase in the farmer income by 10% over a 10-year period of time.
- Better economic conditions for the farmers help in getting education for the children, and nutrition for the family.
About the Project: Green Tamil Nadu
The project Green Tamil Nadu is an ongoing project to help achieve increased greenery in the state. In this project, we identify sites and reach out to farmer groups to plant trees on their lands near forest areas. We identify high-quality seedlings of fruit trees, timber trees, medicinal plants, and forest trees, and then plant them on the farmers’ lands. We explain to the farmers how to raise them, providing insights into best practices and the benefits they will receive in the next 2, 5, 10, and 20 years.
Experts make periodic visits to monitor progress and guide the farmers. We record the current condition of the farmers and forest cover on a platform, updating it during every visit to track improvements. The project continually identifies new sites and farmer groups to spread the benefits to all.
Furthermore, the project team actively geotags the trees, ensuring precise tracking of their locations. GPS technology is utilized to mark the area boundary accurately. Notably, farmer details, including relevant images, are diligently captured and securely stored through mobile apps directly from the field. This comprehensive data collection process enables the project to maintain a robust database.
Additionally, the project calculates the yearly carbon fixation by employing expert-developed equations specific to different tree species within the app. These calculations are then integrated into detailed reports, providing valuable insights into the project’s environmental impact. Throughout the entire data acquisition, storage, and analysis process, the project maintains total transparency, ensuring the reliability and integrity of the information collected. This commitment to transparency allows for informed decision-making and effective monitoring of the project’s progress.
Particularly, the project team actively measures the impact it creates for both wildlife and farmers. Regularly capturing data at defined intervals ensures a comprehensive assessment of the project’s effects. We meticulously analyze this data by comparing it with the previous data collected on the same parameters calculated a few months ago. The observed changes are precisely measured against the planned results, enabling an accurate evaluation of progress and effectiveness.
Furthermore, this systematic monitoring allows for a deeper understanding of the project’s outcomes and facilitates informed decision-making. By comparing the current data with past records, the project can identify trends, successes, and areas for improvement. This process ensures that the project remains on track and enables the necessary adjustments to achieve the desired results.
The project reports are prepared and sent to the contributors. The report covers the following
1) Trees status as on the last visit made
2) Any mortality in the trees planted
3) Carbon fixed in MT from the start of the project
4) Quantity of fruits that are being produced by the planted trees
5) Economic impact on the farmers.
6) Ecological impact created.
